Over the past few months, multiple leaks indicated that Rockstar Games was remaking some of the older Grand Theft Auto games, in the form of a GTA Trilogy. To further fuel these rumours, Rockstar pursued legal action against developers who remastered the older GTA games.
October 2021 marks 20 extremely successful years for the franchise. To mark the occasion, on October 8th 2021, Rockstar Games announced that they will celebrate the anniversary with the release of the widely rumoured GTA Trilogy. This Definitive Edition will comprise of GTA 3, Vice City and San Anreas.
This edition will be available on the following devices:
- Playstation 4 & 5
- Xbox Series X & S
- Xbox One
- Nintendo Switch
- PC (Rockstar Games Launcher)
- Android & iOS (they will release a bit later, in the first half of 2022)
In their Newswire, Rockstar also claimed that the Definitive Edition will bring graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements to all three of the featured titles. The extent to which is yet to be seen, as Rockstar Games is notorious for over-hyping content. Fan remasters of these games have already set a high bar. So this announcement will be met with some scepticism from long term fans, who have noted major in-game issues going unaddressed for years. Particularly after their recent train-wreck of an announcement for GTA 5 Expanded & Enhanced.
This edition is coming to the platforms listed above by Christmas 2021.
In the meantime, GTA Online players can look out for some special gear in-game. These are meant to celebrate the release of this new GTA Trilogy. These will include commemorative clothing and liveries. In addition, GTA will also continue to recycle the Adversary Mode jobs available by removing less popular ones.
Next DLC Hinted At
Along with this string of announcements, Rockstar hinted at the next DLC, which will likely land in December 2021. Rockstar stated that familiar contacts and characters will “need your help in expanding their legit businesses“.
